- The Rocky Mountain Horse Association was established as a nonprofit corporation in 1986. The Rocky Mountain Horse R is a certification mark issued by the Rocky Mountain Horse Association by the U.S. Patent Office. The name may be applied only to those horses registered by the Rocky Mountain Horse Association. Currently there are approximately 7,000 registered Rocky Mountain Horses in the Registry.

- All horses must be examined for breed characteristics prior to breeding. The Rocky Mountain is a medium sized horse, 14'2 to 16 hands. The Horse has a natural ambling four beat gait with no evidence of pacing. This is a naturally occurring gait that does not require any training aids (i.e., chains, soring, or built up shoes). The Rocky has a docile temperament and solid body color.
